Steve "Sparky" Fifer

Sparky: Impressions from the NFL Combine

Rex Ryan: This guy is larger than life when he is in a room and demands your attention when he is at the podium by the way he carries himself. You can say what you want about him as a head football coach but his presence is something I haven’t seen much in my time covering sports.
RGIII: I fell in love with the quarterback from Baylor. For a college student addressing the hordes of media the way he did was truly impressive. He showed personality, charisma, and charm while still exhibiting confidence and wit. This is a young man who comes from a military background that emphasizes hard work and not quitting when times get tough. If I had a top three pick, I’d have no problems drafting him to be the next face of my franchise.
Andrew Luck: I have never doubted that he is a very good quarterback, but I guess I never been truly sold on him as a leader and a communicator. To be quite honest, after having been there and seeing him handle the media, I’m still not convinced. He just doesn’t come across that well to me. This isn’t to say I wouldn’t take him number one but I think it’s a coin flip between him and RGIII.
Ted Thompson: He was the talk of the combine for the next couple of hours after he was done talking at his presser. You have to understand that Ted clearly isn’t Rex Ryan and isn’t going to entertain or even crack jokes. That was the case until the NFL Combine, when he dropped an “Opposite George” reference from Seinfeld. Everybody there started laughing and a buzz was created out of it.
Trent Richardson: The running back from Alabama came to the podium with an agenda it seemed like. He was there to defend his position and why he should still be taken earlier in the draft. Richardson didn’t shy away from stating how good he was and how important of a mentor Mark Ingram was for him. Trent also talked about wanting to be an every down back and not getting pulled for passing downs or goal line carries.
LaMichael James:  I went into saying that he is the next Darren Sproles, however, he doesn’t like that comparison and claims he is an every down back. If I’m a general manager, I want to know how serious is about this line of thinking and how much of a problem he might be if he isn’t that every down back. He says he gained weight to play every down, I say lose the weight and be an exceptional third down back for the next 10 years.
Russell Wilson: Very impressive. Yet again another guy exuding lot’s of confidence in himself, but not being cocky about it. He also emphasized that he has not been asked to play any other position at the next level. However, the measurement of just over five foot ten, concerns me regardless of the comparison to Drew Brees. I think he can be a serviceable backup quarterback but not a pro bowl player at the next level.
