Wickett's World - maybe MNF was a GOOD thing?

Maybe this was a "good" thing?

Ok...Monday night sucked, if you're a Packers fan. I normally don't blame offcials but for the 2nd time in my life, i watched an officiating crew steal a game from an NFL team. The last was SBXL in Detroit. (Ironicially enough, both games involved the Seattle Seahwaks). Monday night, the replacement referees STOLE the game from the Green Bay Packers.

Yes, the Pack stunk in the 1st half, allowing QB Aaron Rodgers to get sacked 8 times (that's more than 24 NFL TEAMS to this point of the season). Yes, head coach Mike Maccarthy took too long to switch to his no huddle. You figure watching his OL get beat OVER AND OVER, only to lead to a severe head/body ache coming for his franchise QB for an entire quarter, wouldve persuaded him to make a change, or perhaps hand the ball off to his running back...but no. Despite that, and despite the fact that the Packers' wide receivers couldn't get open...and despite the fact that the Packers DL couldn't stop Marshaun Lynch from gaining 4 yards EVERY TIME he touched the ball...they were still in position to win this game. But 3 calls took it away from the Green & Gold.

1) Roughing the passer. LB Eric Walden hit Seattle QB Russell Wilson "late". Wilsons pass was knocked up in the air and intercepted by Jerron McMillian. Walden was NOT LATE. (more on that in a blog later this week)

2) Pass Interference. I've never seen a DB get pulled by the shoulder, have his head turned and shoved to the ground on the same play ALL by the wide reciever only to watch the ball and a yellow flag hit the ground. This happened to Sam Shields, and the penalty was him.

3) The final play. Should it have come down this? nope, but it did. Wilson threw a perfect hail mary pass to the endzone only to have Packers S M.D. Jennings intercept it...or so we thought. The ball is CLEARLY in the arms, cradled by Jennings. Seattle WR Golden Tate had a HAND on it. Imagine if you switched jersey's and Jennings was the wideout...was it a TD? Yep.

I've been saying all along that it would take a marquee team in the NFL on a marquee night to get this stupid lockout/strike/total suckage of a disagreement fixed. We may have had that monday night. The Packers are one of the NFL's marquee teams. Monday Night Football is arguably the leagues BIGGEST NIGHT of the week. Perhaps, with all of the country watching, we can get the two sides together and FIX IT...or the NFL can continue to go on as the 1st 3 weeks have, and we'll get more fights, bad outcomes, terrible calls and long games...

Final score: Seattle Replacement Refs 14 Green Bay Packers 12.

cheers...

Wickett's World - Really? ANOTHER lockout?

Really??? Another lockout? Look, i know you probably aren't the biggest NHL fan. I get that. Milwaukee isn't a "hockey town". But right now, we're about to watch the National Hockey Legue fall back off the radar they had worked themselves back onto...after they last locked out. And once again, sports fans will suffer. We'll suffer because ONCE AGAIN millionaires and BILLIONAIRES can't split up a bunch of money. Awesome.

Didn't we just go through this? TWICE? The NFL suffered in 2011. MOST rookies weren't prepared for the regular season. Yes, i know Cam Newton was freaking ridiculous, but the majority of the rookies NEED a full training camp and didn't get it. New head coaches suffered too, not having a full training camp with their new teams. The NBA? Again, the rookies suffered. Fans suffered too. Unlike the NFL season, we didn't get a full NBA season. 66 games packed into 4 months? Yikes. Yes, it was cool to have all those games, but the quality suffered. The teams suffered.

As a big hockey fan, i don't want to see any games get cancelled. I don't want to see hockey fall off the sports fans radar. Did you watch the NHL playoffs? As usual, they were tremendous. A freaking 8-seed won the cup! Sadly, we're going to lose training camp. We're going to lose preseason games. We're going to lose regular season games. We MAY lose the entire regular season...it's too bad this has become the norm in sports today.

Cheers...

Wickett's World - what did the win really mean?

What did the win mean?

Packers fans sanity was put at ease after the 23-10 victory over the Chicago Bears on thursday night...but what did it mean? Well, on the surface it means that Packer are "back". However, there's still a lot of work to do if they want to bring the Lombardi trophy home.

-The offense never really looked in sync. Was this because Greg Jennings was out with the groin injury? I say no. QB Aaron Rodgers was OK against Chicago. He should've wound up with better numbers than 22-32 219yds 1TD 1INT. TE Jermichael Finley did him no favors with his usual day: 4 catches, 2 drops, 1 fumble and a complete lack of blocking knowledge/ability. Jordy Nelson had a big drop in the end zone too. But the bigger question is on the offensive line. Rodgers had to run for his life many times and was hurried all night long. I've tried to back Marshall. I really have. But he's just not that good of a left tackle. Really can't wait to get Derrick Sherrod back. TJ Lang had an ok night. Even Brian Bulaga had his struggles. I will give the Bears some credit. They have a darn good pass rush with Julius Peppers and that rookie McClellan from Boise.

-Is this defense THIS good? No. The bears OL is THAT BAD. Jay Cutler may die this season. Whether from the lack of protection, or from picking fights with his left tackle. Clay is a beast. We know that. I love the use of rookie Mike Daniels in rotation with another rookie, Jerel Worthy. LB DJ Smith looks to be a nice replacement for the injured Desmond Bishop, and oh by the way, the 2010 Eric Walden appears to be back.

So...what did the win mean? Still not sure about this years team. The O will be more tested when they travel to Seattle next week. The seachickens D is good. It will be interesting to see what they do with the mobile Russell Wilson.

Cheers..
